Cinema is about the face. The close up shot was developed in the early cinema to scrutinise the subtle expressions and interior thoughts on the actor’s face. These grids convert such small cinematic moments in time into still photos, thus freezing the performance for scrutiny. Part of an exploration into representations of masculinity.
