The vast mapping project Google Earth is possibly the most ambitious photographic project in history. But what interests me is not how Google Earth renders the planet’s surface realistically but how it abstracts it. Through a digital mirroring process, the endless twisting and looping highways that criss-cross the planet become decorative designs. They resemble tapestries or Persian carpets, or, considering their aerial viewpoint, flying carpets.
